eMule is one of the most popular file sharing softwares on the Internet.
With this file sharing software we can all kinds of files from the Internet. We can download music, movies, documents, software, etc. The files that are available to be downloaded, are files that users share. When we download a file, we're downloading it from other user's computer. So we can find any kind of file in the file sharing networks. This type of network is called P2P.
eMule is based on P2P networks and allows us to share any file from the file system. We have to take care and not share folders or files that contain private data, because those files will be available on P2P networks, and other user could download those files.
To download files from eMule we can do this by using the built-in search or we can use web pages that contain “e2k” links that will be opened and downloaded in the program.
The settings for this program is not the most simple, since we need to open certain ports in the router (TCP: 11689 and UDP: 45194), and adjust the number of established connections, along with the download and upload speed. Many users stop using this software because they fail to set it up correctly, and therefore the speed of the downloads is not optimal.
The program is not updated since year 2010, this being one of the reasons because the program is less used. Another reason that has influenced the decrease of this program is the appearance of other P2P networks, whose clients are more easy-to-use and fastest in the file download, such as for example the BitTorrent network. Another factor to take into account to understand the disuse of this program are direct download web pages.
The program incorporates IRC chat client, so we can enter the official channel of eMule to ask for help, in addition to using other channels to talk to more people. Although today, the chat rooms are practically empty.
This program was one of the most important for file sharing over a decade ago. Right now, its use is limited to those users who are looking for certain files that are not found in other networks, and for those users who are comfortable with the configuration and use of the program.
The program is free and is available for Windows.
