Trillian is a software that allows us to set up and use multiple Instant messaging (IM) accounts on the same program.
It is quite common to have multiple IM accounts at different providers. For example, we can have an account on Yahoo! Messenger and another in Windows Live Messenger, and in each one of them we have different contacts. In addition, surely we have an account in twitter, Facebook, and multiple e-mail accounts. All of these accounts require different programs to connect and use them, this means having several windows open, configure various programs and switching the window every time we have a new notification.
Trillian allows us to combine multiple instant messaging accounts, social networks, and e-mail in a single interface. The instant messaging accounts supported by Trillian are the following:
- Windows Live Messenger
- Google Talk
- Yahoo! Messenger
- AOL Instant Messenger
The social networking accounts supported are:
We can configure POP3 and IMAP e-mail account.
To use the program, we must create an user account on the official Trillian website. Once the account is created, we will install the program and set up instant messaging accounts, social networks, and e-mail that we are going to use. The configuration is simple, so we just have to enter user name and password for each account that we want to use in the program.
The interface of the program is well-organized. There is a tab for e-mail accounts, other tab for social network, and another for instant messaging contacts. In this way, in addition to having all accounts consolidated in the same program, we have accounts organized by type. Every time we receive a new message from a contact, or a new email, or a new notice on a social network, the program will display a small notification to indicate that there is a new activity.
We can create chat groups with contacts from different accounts. For example, we can create a group called “Friends”, and include contacts from Yahoo, Skype, etc.
Another of the advantages of having all of our accounts centralized in a single application, is that we only need to configure this application. So in Trillian we can configure the contact list appearance, look of window chat, font type, spelling, sound and notifications, microphone and video camera, transfer files, and history of discussions. In addition, we can configure the appearance of the program using “Skins”, and install emoticons and sounds packages. We can configure the program to run at Windows start. Keep in mind that in the settings there is an option that is checked by default called “send anonymous usage statistics to Cerulean Studios”, we must uncheck this box if we don't want to send any kind of information.
The program is free, but it offers a paid version that includes the ability to synchronize all of our accounts on different devices, so we can begin a conversation on PC, and continue it on our mobile phone, having access to the history of the conversation in any device or computer. Free version includes ads, which can be removed if we buy the paid version.
