Deluge is a program that is used for managing and downloading files from Torrent file sharing networks.
In Torrent networks you can find a lot of files: music, videos, books, software, etc. Despite the fact that this type of networks are associated to sharing files with copyright, we can also download a multitude of files of free distribution, which makes it important to have a program that allows us to manage and download .torrent files.
Deluge is a very good solution to download .torrent files, since that is cross-platform and we will be able to use it on Windows, Mac and Linux. In this way we will be able to download .torrent files on virtually any computer. In addition, the program is installed as a “Client/Server”. That means that we can install the program on a PC and use it remotely from another PC, without the need to install it on both Computers. For example, if we have a computer where we store our photos, videos, documents, etc (NAS), we can install Deluge on this PC to manage .torrent files downloads. Once installed on the NAS, we can access to the program via web browser (http://NAS_IP:8112) and handle all the torrent files that are being downloaded, in addition to adding new torrent files. In this way we can add torrents from any PC in the local network without having to install the same program on all PCs. In addition all downloads will be stored in the same location, which is very practical and the downloads will be well organized and accessible from the local network.
Note: the default password to access the web graphical interface is: deluge
The installation of the program is very simple and does not include any kind of spyware or malware. The user interface is simple and allows us to add .torrent files quickly, either by adding the .torrent file, or by using magnet links.
When we start to download a .torrent file, we will see the content of that .torrent file, so we'll be able to choose which files we from that torrent we want to download.
We will be able to see relevant information about the file we are downloading: description, download progress of contained files, download speed, upload speed, etc.
The program allows us to limit the bandwidth used to download torrent files. In this way we will avoid saturating our Internet connection and we will be able to surf the Internet o read our email without any problem. There is also the possibility to set download and upload speed of each torrent.
We can also create a weekly schedule and limit Deluge download/upload speed. For example, we reduce download speed from Monday to Friday from 18:00 to 23:00, because that time we're going to use our Internet connection and we don't want that Deluge interfere in our surf on the net. This is just an example and you can schedule any other hours.
Another interesting feature included in the program is the encryption. Many Internet service providers limit the traffic that comes from programs that share torrent files. So if we are using a software to share torrent files, our ISP (Internet Service Provider) will detect this and will decrease the speed of our Internet connection.
Thanks to the encryption system included in the program, the traffic of the torrent files will be hidden and the Internet service providers will find it more difficult to detect that we are using torrent networks, so that they will not limit our connection to the Internet.
The functionality of the program can be increased thanks to the included plugin system. Among others we will be able to install plugins to block IPs, run a command when a download has finished, autoextract the contents of the compressed files, send e-mail notifications, and more.
Note: it's important to note that the web interface (WebUi), and the weekly Scheduler, are plugins that we must enable in the settings of the program.
Without a doubt, Deluge is a great candidate to become our favorite torrent file manager, since that includes a multitude of features and at the same time it is very simple to install and operate, to be a perfect program for beginners as well as advanced users.
