Thanks to the personal computers and the programs free of charge, we can perform certain tasks that were previously reserved exclusively for professionals. This is the case of audio editing, which a few decades ago was something exclusive of the professionals of the sector that had the computers and software appropriate to carry out the task. Now any user who has access to a PC, can edit audio in a professional way.
Audacity is a powerful audio editor, which allows us to create new audio files, or edit those already existing.Program's graphical interface is simple and direct. Main window central part is reserved to represent the audio file in a wave form, this way we will be able to select certain parts of the wave sound to delete it, mute it or modify it.At the top there are some buttons: record, play, stop, pause, fast forward, and rewind. In addition to other buttons that allows us to: edit, zoom, select, cut, copy, paste, etc.In the bottom there is information about the frequency of the sound file, and about the time of start and end of the selection in the wave sound.
We can open an audio file that already exists, or we can record sound coming through the microphone. To record sound from a microphone or any other input device, we will have to press on the red button “Record” that is at the top of the screen. The program supports USB devices input sound, such as sound cards, or microphones.
The program includes a large number of sound effects that can be applied in all the audio file, or in a selection of the same. Some of the available effects are: echo, pitch shift, pace modification, normalize, wahwah, tremolo, vocoder, vocal elimination, etc.
Once we have finished editing the audio file, we can save it to a digital format (WAV, OGG, AIFF, FLAC and MP2). If we want to save in other formats such as MP3, or WMA files, we need to install suitable codecs in our PC, and the program will offer this formats when we save audio file.
As is usual in this type of programs, we have the possibility of using the interface using keyboard shortcuts, which allows a speed of execution higher than if we only use the mouse. Keyboard shortcuts can be configured in the corresponding menu to suit our needs.
The program is free and is updated frequently, as its development is quite active. The software can be installed on Windows, Linux and Mac.On official website there are some useful tutorials that help us to get the best out of this software.
